I have used East of India tape to join the flags together but any cotton ribbon will do. Dressmaker’s binding works a treat too but will not be as decorative.

Christmas Pennant

A Christmas pennant makes a great alternative to a wreath – just hang it on your front door to welcome guests to your home during the festive season. You will need a sturdy hanger to keep it in place and a fabric-covered wooden dowel is ideal.

You will need

23cm × 46cm (9in × 18in) green dot fabric

59cm × 7.5cm (23in × 3in) red fabric

35.5cm × 40.5cm (14in × 16in) backing fabric

35.5cm × 40.5cm (14in × 16in) background fabric (I used a green check)

35.5cm × 40.5cm (14in × 16in) thick interfacing or blackout lining

Scraps of brown, red, white and green fabric for the appliqué

55cm (22in) square of fusible webbing

76cm (30in) red narrow ric-rac

Ribbon bow

Three small bells

One black micro button

Three small white star-shaped buttons

Two red medium-sized buttons

Two small pom poms

33cm (13in) length of wooden dowel

120cm (47in) of 2cm (3⁄4in) ready-made binding

50cm (20in) hanging cord
